It is nice to see the sun out for a change. Being stuck in Oregon we see a lot of rain and not the sun is out and this is a great time to dig out the sunglasses. Sure we all forget to wear them from time to time but really with the hot weather here it is time for them. It is strange at times we have such raining weather and other times it is so bright. We’ll no matter what the sun is doing it is a great idea to a have a pair of sunglasses handy. Continue reading »
When it comes to dueling, the classic tactic was always to find the opponent’s weak spot or to disarm him or her so that it would be easier for you to win. In the case of this authentic Chinese sword breaker, its owner can do both to all its opponents in hand to hand combat. The small dagger-like weapon is meant to not only block off attacks by making sure that the weapons it collides with are crossed but it is also used to make sure that the weapons of their enemies will be taken out of their hands as well. I had never owned a clay baker and I actually wasn’t even aware that they existed. I do most of my stove top cooking in my hard-anodized cookware and usually do my oven baking in aluminum pans and ceramic casserole dishes. Then I was reading an article recently that mentioned cooking in clay so I went online and found a wonderful selection of clay cookware available for sale. Since I love to cook and try out new cooking methods, I went ahead and purchased the Romertopf Medium Covered Clay Baker. Continue reading »

It’s the time of year that I get to add to my wonderful collection of outdoor décor that I have gathered over the last 30 years of traveling and shopping. These treasures may not have cost much but the value they bring to my life cannot be measured in dollars and cents. Continue reading »

The quality of the treated water supplied by the local authorities may not be meeting drinking water standards. With addition of chlorine and other harsh chemicals raw water is treated in clarifiers and supplied for domestic use. There are many disadvantages associated with this treated water. I feel like this should be a headline on my personal family newspaper! That’s because this precious sterling silver Chihuahua charm caused such a commotion in my living room this Christmas that I had to let other people in on the story. My daughter, who is 11 and completely in love with her Chihuahua had eyes as big as saucers when she opened the little silver box with the big red bow. “Oh Mommy, where did you find this?” You’d think I’d given her a million dollars. Charley, her pet Chihuahua sleeps with her and stays glued to her side all day long. They are the best of friends. Continue reading »

If you’ve got a finicky eater in the house, you may have given up on scalloped potatoes because they can be a little too sharp tasting, or have too much onion. This recipe for crock pot scalloped potatoes is really kid-friendly, but will be enjoyed by grown ups as well. By replacing the sharp cheddar with American Cheese, you bring the dish more in the line with a kid’s taste buds, but keep the creamy and cheesy texture and flavor. You can also add ham if you would like to create a full meal. Continue reading »

When tailgating at the last Chiefs home game with my friend, Alisa, and her husband, Erik, I was in charge of the cooler. We grilled our hamburgers and popped open the chips and I grabbed my old standby, an ice-cold Bud Light. To my dismay, I found that I had forgotten the bottle opener. Erik laughed and pulled a shiny, metal cylinder from his pocket. “What’s that?” I asked, astounded. He replied that it was the Stainless Steel Push and Pop Bottle Opener. Continue reading »
When I was growing up one of the favorite treats of the holiday season was homemade date nut bread. My sisters and I would help my Mom make batches and batches of the rich, moist bread to give out to neighbors and relatives as a special winter treat. We’d bake the bread in loaf pans, muffin pans and even empty soup cans when we ran out of bakeware. The loaf pans and baking pans that we had back then don’t compare to some of the great baking tools that you can get today. For instance, the Kaiser Half-Round Loaf Pan that I have now would have been perfect for our date nut bread project. Continue reading »

Some people are prejudiced against boxers due to their tendency to slobber all over the place. Well, love just transcends that kind of thing. In fact, I love boxers so much that I wear cute boxer jewelry, whenever I can find it. Yep, I’m proud to be a boxer owner, and I like to promote the breed in any way I can. What I like about some of the pieces I’ve seen on line is that it’s getting easier to find them with their ears in the natural (unclipped) state. I think that shows some sensitivity on the part of the artist making them towards a more humane treatment of these great dogs. Continue reading »

Thursday is taco night at our house. We have a lot going on that day and tacos are easy and more importantly fast to make and everyone seems to like them. Unfortunately we all started to get a little tired of them, so I decided to try this chick pea tacos recipe instead. They are very yummy, but I have to warn you… if you don’t use enough avocado as “glue”, the chick peas start to roll all over the place, making it a bit of a challenge to eat them. Continue reading »
As fall slowly leads into winter, I find my thoughts turn to soup making. I’m certain that there is nothing more comforting in the world than a nice pot of homemade soup. Sure, canned soup is okay but soup carefully calibrated to your own personal taste is really something special. As with everything else, you need proper equipment to get the job done. I can’t imagine embarking on a season of soup making without my hefty 12-quart stainless stockpot. Continue reading »
It’s funny. I run my own successful coffee stand and yet I can barely hold onto money. It’s not that I spend it furiously. I just lose lots of it regularly. I’m going to do the smart thing and test out an engraved money clip. I usually run into problems when I want to take or put cash in the teller. I like to keep between 80 and 100 dollars on hand. This is just to take care of both small and big problems that a credit card might not work on. Sometimes a vending machine is all that’s available.
One thing I want to do with the money clip is to use it as a marker for money that I keep on hand but do not want to spend if possible. It will allow me a visual cue for how much I actually have left while also helping in the fight against the temptation to spend furiously. This way I will know for sure when I have run out of money that I can actually afford to spend on unnecessary items.
I got the idea for the money clip when I was looking for some unique personalized gifts at EyeCandyGift.com. If you are wondering what to get for the upcoming holiday season, consider an engraved gift item there.
